Dr. Birgit Ertl-Wagner has been appointed as the new Radiologist-in-Chief at SickKids, Toronto!
Dr. Ertl-Wagner has been a valuable member of SickKids since 2018, serving as the Division Chief of Neuroradiology, Associate Chief of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, and Derek Harwood-Nash Chair in Medical Imaging. Additionally, she holds the position of Senior Associate Scientist in the Neurosciences & Mental Health Program of the SickKids Research Institute and is a Professor and Vice Chair Research in the Department of Medical Imaging at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Ertl-Wagner studied in Germany where she obtained her medical degree, completed her PhD dissertation and her Master of Health Business Administration. Prior to coming to SickKids, Dr. Ertl-Wagner was appointed in the Department of Radiology of the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich, where she was section chief of magnetic resonance imaging, vice-chair of operations and professor of clinical and experimental magnetic resonance imaging. In addition, she led the areas of pediatric neuroradiology and head and neck imaging.
Dr. Ertl-Wagner's research demonstrates a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative approach that emphasizes translation between basic science and clinical research. She has employed a variety of methodological approaches, including phase contrast imaging, functional MR imaging, diffusion tensor imaging, MR spectroscopy, and various perfusion techniques, and has a keen interest in translating methods of Artificial Intelligence into the clinical-radiological setting.
Furthermore, Dr. Ertl-Wagner serves as a Deputy Editor for the journal Radiology and an associate editor for the journals AJNR, Neuroradiology, and Neuro-Oncology. She also acts as a reviewer for multiple scientific journals and grant funding agencies and is a board member of the ASPNR. Dr. Ertl-Wagner has received numerous awards for her research and teaching.
