Awards Overview
DEREK HARWOOD-NASH AWARD
This Award is aimed at recognizing excellence in research in the field of pediatric neuroradiology.
Purpose: The Derek Harwood Nash Award is given annually to the physician(s) who presented the best paper, poster, or electronic exhibit at the ASNR Annual Meeting in recognition of their contribution to promoting excellence in research and education in the field of pediatric neuroradiology.
Candidates: Any physician(s) who has/have been selected by the ASNR to present a scientific paper, poster, or electronic exhibit at the ASNR Annual Meeting.
Award Process: The ASNR Educational Exhibits Committee identifies the ten most promising papers, posters, and/or electronic exhibits on topics of pediatric neuroradiology that have been submitted for presentation at the ASNR Annual Meeting. These abstracts are reviewed and scored by ASPNR representatives selected by the ASPNR Program/Education Committee Chair. The ASPNR Program/Education Committee Chair identifies the winner and notifies the ASNR. The ASNR sends the award recipient a check and a certificate and the winner is recognized on the ASPNR website. The award is funded by the ASNR.
Award Presentation: The Derek Harwood Nash Award recipient receives a $1,000 cash award and a certificate from the ASNR by mail and recognition of their award on the ASPNR website.
GOLD MEDAL AWARD
From 2000-2004, the ASPNR presented a Special Recognition Award. In 2005, that award was replaced with the Gold Medal Award. Past recipients of the Special Recognition Award were presented with Gold Medals. The first Gold Medal Award was presented in 2006.
Purpose: The Gold Medal is intended to foster the highest standards of the American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology, recognizing exceptional service and achievement. The Gold Medal is awarded on the basis of both professional and personal excellence, honoring individuals who are superb pediatric neuroradiologists, scientists, and/or physicians, and who also are truly outstanding people. Recipients will have consistently extended themselves beyond self-interest to make contributions that have benefited our entire field.
Candidates: Individuals who are clinicians, researchers, teachers, or pediatric neuroradiological statesmen and stateswomen may be considered for the Gold Medal. Candidates need not be members of the American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology. Nominees should have made extraordinary contributions to enhance the development and/or stature of pediatric neuroradiology, including service to the Society.
Nominations: anyone holding Member status in the Society may submit nominations, as follows:
- Nominations must be sent by e-mail to the ASPNR Gold Medal Award Committee via Kristine Kulpaka at kkulpaka@asnr.org. On the subject line of the e-mail indicate ASPNR Gold Medal Award. Attach your nomination letter as a Word or pdf document. Be sure to provide the qualifications of the candidate in detail.
- Confidentiality is essential. The candidate should not be aware of his/her nomination.
Exclusions: Current Officers of the Society, members of the Executive Committee, and members of the Gold Medal Award Committee are ineligible for nomination. The Gold Medal will not be awarded posthumously unless a candidate dies after having been selected.
Award Process: The Gold Medal Award Committee will recommend up to two candidates to the Executive Committee, which will determine the Gold Medal recipient by majority vote.
Award Presentation: The Gold Medal will be awarded at the ASPNR’s June 2018 Annual Business Meeting during the ASNR 56th Annual Meeting in Vancouver, British Colombia, CANADA.
PEDIATRIC NEURORADIOLOGY RESEARCH AWARD
The ASPNR Research ad hoc Committee oversees the ASPNR Annual Award in Pediatric Neuroradiology Research and selects the recipient of the award. The ASPNR Research Award is designed to foster opportunities for investigators in pediatric neuroradiology, to gain further insight into the scientific investigation, and to develop competence in research.
Purpose:
The ASPNR Research Award is designed to foster opportunities for investigators in Pediatric Neuroradiology, to gain further insight into the scientific investigation, and to develop competence in research.
Eligibility:
Any basic and/or clinical science topic relevant to the discipline of Pediatric Neuroradiology is acceptable. Faculty in North American departments of radiology who are at the Instructor or Assistant Professor levels with a formal faculty appointment are eligible to apply. Adjunct faculty or other adjunct scholars are ineligible. Prospective trainees (including clinical fellows, radiology residents, and medical students) require a sponsor from the ASPNR and are encouraged to apply as well. Candidates who are trainees must be enrolled in a North American ACGME-approved Radiology residency program, an ACGME-approved Pediatric Radiology or Neuroradiology fellowship program, or a North American Pediatric Neuroradiology fellowship program or medical school. The candidate (or sponsor, if the candidate is a clinical fellow, radiology resident, or medical student) is required to be a member of the ASPNR.
Location of Study:
The award is given to the Radiology department to which the investigator belongs, or which is sponsoring the application, in the case of a medical student. The project should be carried out at the institution where the recipient holds a position.
Conditions of Appointment:
The recipient is eligible for a one-time grant. It is expected, although not mandated, that the supported research would yield a worthy paper to be submitted to the Program Committee for presentation at the subsequent American Society of Neuroradiology Annual Meeting. As with other submitted papers, this will be judged on a competitive basis. The Society’s official journal, the American Journal of Neuroradiology (AJNR), must have the first opportunity for publication of the work. All scientific publications and exhibits resulting from the research must acknowledge the support of the ASPNR and The Foundation of the ASNR. The recipient is required to submit a written report to the Chair of the ASPNR Research Committee and the Foundation of the ASNR Board of Trustees on the progress of the work one year after receipt of the award.
Stipends and Allowances:
The stipend is to be used to pay for the research project (imaging time, animal care, equipment, and supplies). The funds may not be used to cover travel to the host institution for performing the research or for personal items such as laptops. They may not be used for a study that has already been substantially performed. Any remaining stipend funds, or the education fund, may be used to pay for travel to present the results at the Annual Meeting of the ASNR. The education component should be used for relevant educational purposes or to present the results at the annual meeting of the ASNR only, and cannot be used for the research component or salary support. The host institution is expected to distribute the gross amount in a fashion that is in compliance with existing state and federal tax codes. Indirect costs should not be taken out of the award. If the host institution requires indirect costs to be taken out of the award, the applicant will become ineligible. The ASPNR reserves the right to limit the full amount of the award based on the scope of the submitted research proposal. The ASPNR also reserves the right to cancel an application at any time if the policies and procedures outlined in this guide are not followed. The ASPNR may forgo awarding the research grant in a particular year if the applications do not meet quality or priority requirements as determined by the Research Committee.
Method of Application:
The process begins with the submission of a Letter of Intent, which can be downloaded from the ASPNR website, and must be submitted to Kristine Kulpaka (kkulpaka@asnr.org) in .pdf format. Following review, applications will be provided for the most promising projects and must be submitted electronically to the Headquarters Office. The Letters of Intent and subsequent full applications will be judged by a subcommittee of the ASPNR Research Committee. The applications will be scored based on overall merit, the importance of the topic, hypothesis, methodology, investigator, availability of resources, academic career significance, and budget allocation.
Award Presentation: The winner of the Research Grant will be announced at the ASPNR’s June 2018 Annual Business Meeting during the ASNR 56th Annual Meeting in Vancouver, British Colombia, CANADA.
