Member Spotlight Series: Featuring Dr. Kish Mankad from Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, UK
Kish Mankad, MD
Professional Title: Clinical Lead for Pediatric Neuroradiology
Locale: Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, UK
ASPNR Member Since: 2018
ASPNR: What attracted you to pediatric neuroradiology?
Kish Mankad: The ability to make a difference early in the life of our little patients, and to support innovations and interventions that can alter the natural course of illnesses, or provide answers when it matters most.
ASPNR: Do you have a colleague or mentor that inspired you in your career?
KM: My true inspirations have been my mother, also one of my teachers in primary school, who taught me the life lessons of persistence and standing up strong on my own spine; my sister, who teaches me resilience every day of my life even from afar, and my wife who allows me to do everything I ever wanted to do in life without ever batting an eyelid.
ASPNR: What is your favorite part of your job?
KM: Doing clinical rounds with my residents, not just going through cases, but talking life philosophies and diving deep into the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ of the basic science driving what we see on scans.
ASPNR: What is the biggest challenge of your job?
KM: Leading by example (always)- this can be an exhausting draining exercise and seem futile many a times, yet it is the single most important attribute of a true leader- to be able to inspire people to do their best and achieve their full potential.
ASPNR: What is the most interesting project you are working on right now?
KM: My analysis of a large cohort of pediatric brain tumors to generate real world data in terms of assessing the impact of Radiology in the diagnostic pathway of tumors in the molecular era. What is our added value?
ASPNR: What words of wisdom would you pass onto your junior attending self?
KM: Connect more with your patients and families- emerge from the reading room. There’s not just learning there that will guide your practice, but above all there is humanism there!
ASPNR: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
KM: I have an IMDb rating of 8, based on starring in a short film which was in 2008 accepted into the Cannes Film Festival- titled The Shades of Temptation.
ASPNR: Will you be attending the 5th ASPNR meeting in New Orleans in 2023?
KM: Nothing can stop me from being there!
