Jason Wright MD
Professional Title: Assistant Professor of Radiology
Locale: Seattle Children’s Hospital and University of Washington, Seattle, WA
Fellowships: Pediatric Radiology, Pediatric Neuroradiology
ASPNR member since 2014
ASPNR: What attracted you to pediatric neuroradiology?
Jason Wright: The complexity of the cases and breadth of pathology—each time you open a pediatric brain MR, it’s like a puzzle waiting to be solved!
ASPNR: Do you have a colleague or mentor that inspired you in your career?
JW: Dennis Shaw has been a great mentor and friend to me. He’s the rare trifecta of brilliant clinician and academician, moonshot creative thinker, and all around super nice guy. And somehow humble to boot. Plus our spouses are both in government, and can chew the fat for hours over dinner!
ASPNR: What is your favorite part of your job?
JW: Sharing great cases with my Peds Neuro group and recommending the right single gene test for my clinical colleagues!
ASPNR: What is the biggest challenge of your job?
JW: The exponential rate of expansion of knowledge in our field, particularly when it comes to genetics and AI. I’m currently collaborating with Kristin Yeom at Stanford on some deep learning projects, and most of the time I feel like she’s talking to me in a totally new and unintelligible language. I’m running to stand still!
ASPNR: What is the most interesting project you are working on right now?
JW: I’m completely immersed in the CNS manifestations of CHARGE syndrome—it might not be entirely healthy!
ASPNR: Name a helpful online resource that your colleagues may not be aware of
JW: GeneReviews (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK138604/) is an amazing resource for neurogenetic diseases. It was developed at the University of Washington and is hosted by the NCBI. I use it on a daily basis.
ASPNR: What was your childhood dream job?
JW: I’ve always known I wanted to be a doctor, though I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have known what a pediatric neuroradiologist was as a kid! I was an EMT prior to medical school, and I thought I was going to be an ER doc when I applied. I grew up in era of ER and FRIENDS, so I blame George Clooney!
ASPNR: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
JW: I’m the proud papa of twin 2-year-olds!
ASPNR: Will you be attending the 2nd ASPNR meeting in in Miami January 2020?
JW: I’ll be there!
