Dr. William T. O’Brien Appointed Radiologist-in-Chief at The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne Australia

The American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology (ASPNR) is pleased to announce that Dr. William T. O’Brien has been appointed Radiologist-in-Chief at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
Dr. O’Brien is a Fellow of the American Osteopathic College of Radiology, with a long-standing career defined by leadership in pediatric neuroradiology, academic excellence, and medical education. He is a past President of ASPNR and currently serves in senior leadership roles within multiple national and international radiology organizations.
Over the past two decades, Dr. O’Brien has held a series of major academic and administrative appointments, including Chief of Pediatric Neuroradiology at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, Chief of Neuroradiology and Director of Pediatric Neuroradiology Fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and Program Director of Diagnostic Radiology Residency at David Grant USAF Medical Center. He has also served as Chair of Radiology at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, overseeing a large clinical and academic department.
His contributions extend across education, research, and publishing. Dr. O’Brien has authored and edited multiple major textbooks, including Top 3 Differentials in Radiology (Thieme) and Neuroimaging Clinics of North America: Pediatric Head & Neck Imaging (Elsevier), along with numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as Radiology, AJR, Neuroradiology, and JAMA Network–affiliated journals. He is also a frequent invited speaker and course director at major international meetings, including RSNA, ASNR, ASPNR, and AOCR.
Dr. O’Brien’s work has been recognized with numerous honors, including national teaching awards, research distinctions, and editorial leadership roles, including Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Osteopathic College of Radiology.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and a former U.S. Air Force physician, Dr. O’Brien’s leadership style is shaped by decades of military and academic service, including command-level positions in military medical centers and extensive experience in healthcare system leadership. Dr. O’Brien possesses a rare ability to implement rigorous organizational standards and inclusive bylaws while maintaining a culture of openness and adaptability.
Within ASPNR and the broader radiology community, he is widely respected as a mentor, educator, and collaborator whose work has helped shape training standards and clinical practice in pediatric neuroradiology internationally.
