IN MEMORIAM

Dear Colleagues,

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the untimely passing of Dr. Andrea Poretti this past week. Many of you knew Andrea from his outstanding contributions to the field of pediatric neuroradiology. Others had the privilege to have worked with him directly. Andrea was at the prime of his life and his career with so much more to offer.

Andrea was an Assistant Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, Department of Radiology, Division of Pediatric Radiology at Johns Hopkins and Department of Neurogenetics at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. He graduated from medical school at the University of Berne, Switzerland and earned his M.D. title at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. He completed a residency in pediatrics and pediatric neurology at the University Children’s Hospital in Zurich and a postdoctoral research fellowship in pediatric neuroimaging at the Johns Hopkins University.

Andrea’s primary focus of expertise and clinical research was in pediatric cerebellar disorders, genetic diseases, and the application of advanced neuroimaging techniques to study the pediatric brain. He even has a congenital cerebellar anomaly named after him, the Poretti-Boltshauser syndrome. Andrea has given more than 70 invited lectures, published over 150 peer reviewed scientific papers and reviews, and written over 30 book chapters.

Dr. Andrea Poretti will be missed sorely by all of us. Our condolences go out to his family and to his colleagues at Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Kennedy Krieger Institute. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen (5200 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21210) at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers or other memorials, please consider a donation to help establish a research fellowship at Johns Hopkins in Andrea’s name. Details are still in progress, but you can communicate your interest in the project by contacting Thierry Huisman MD (thuisma1@jhmi.edu).

Susan Palasis, M.D.
ASPNR President
