MATTHEW BARKOVICH IN THE NEWS

The 2018 ASPNR Derek Harwood Nash Award was awarded to Dr. Matthew Barkovich of UCSF for his work presented at the 56th ASNR Annual Meeting in Vancouver on Segmentation of Pediatric Hindbrain at 7 Tesla: First Steps Toward Developing a Hindbrain Atlas.

Synopsis: Current methods for automated segmentation of the brain are less effective in pediatric patients and this limitation is particularly apparent with regard to the hindbrain. Leveraging our experience with machine learning methods, we are developing an automated probabilistic atlas of the pediatric hindbrain (which will eventually integrate with pre-existing whole brain segmentation software) that automatically segments the hindbrain into 37 discrete regions of interest, using data obtained from MRI examinations of approximately 1500 normal children scanned at 3 Tesla, supplemented by 7 Tesla MRI data to better delineate the iron containing deep hindbrain nuclei.

More about Dr. Barkovich:

Matt Barkovich completed his radiology residency at the University of California, San Francisco in June of 2018 and is presently a diagnostic neuroradiology fellow at UCSF. As a 2017-2018 NIH T-32 scholar, Dr. Barkovich’s research was focused on elucidating the mechanisms of normal brain development through the study of pediatric neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders, predominantly by leveraging pre-existing clinical data. He has studied abnormal cerebellar morphology in neurodevelopmental disorders and has improved methods for automated pediatric cerebellar segmentation.  In children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), he has correlated imaging abnormalities with clinical phenotype and attempted to elucidate how they reflect the inciting alteration of the mTOR/AKT/PI3K pathway.

The Derek Harwood Nash Award also includes a $1,000 award and a certificate from the ASNR. Please join us in congratulating him on this very interesting work!
