Understanding Subdural Collections In Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma
• Filed under: Newsworthy
Subdural collections (SDC) are the most frequently encountered neuroimaging finding in abusive head trauma (AHT). Wittschieber et al. describe the pathophysiology of SDCs and help us understand the limitations of neuroimaging for precise dating of SDCs. Six types of SDCs are described: Subdural hematoma (SDH), subdural hygroma (SDHy), subdural hematohygroma (SDHHy), chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH), subdural effusion, and subdural empyema; the latter two are the sequelae/complications of meningitis or sinusitis.

CHOP Symposium Honors the Retirement of Larissa T Bilaniuk, MD, FACR
• Filed under: Newsworthy
Larissa T Bilaniuk, MD, FACR is an extraordinary person. At a time when women were actively dissuaded from careers in medicine, even relentlessly hazed and frankly abused, she persevered. She was drawn to Radiology and was one of the founding members of the neuroradiology division at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). Early in the formation of the division she was sent by Dr Mark Mishkin to the Montreal Neurological Institute to learn about this newfangled thing called a CT scanner.
Gadolinium Retention In The Human Body: Safety In Children
• Filed under: Newsworthy
Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCA) have been used to enhance MR exams for over three decades. First approved by the FDA in 1988 for clinical use in neuroimaging, they were quickly adopted for imaging of all body parts. GBCAs have exceptional paramagnetic properties, shortening the longitudinal T1 relaxion time and thereby increasing signal on T1-weighted images. GBCAs have excellent safety profile with relatively rare allergic reactions.
